Ich spreche kein Deutsch

After a short (three-day) trip to Linz, Austria this week for an EU project meeting, I realized two things:

1. I really should have given those German classes a second try, despite that one ill-fated college class.
   
2. If it's possible, I now have even more respect for my friends who speak four or five different languages.

Still, with the help of a mobile phone travel dictionary and a little gesturing, I managed to find my way around and order some food (including a Linzer torte, considered the oldest-known cake in the world).

The European project is scheduled to last three years, so there's a good chance I'll be back in Austria now and then. Anyone have a recommendation for a good German study guide?
